After the success of Rome in splitting the Church of the East and having a Catholic Chaldean group reporting directly to it, the Church of the East was thrown into a total chaos were Patriarchs were changing allegiances between Rome back and forth to the old church. Hence, while Yohanan Soulaqa was the first Chaldean Patriarch in 1552, his line came to an end when in 1662 Shimoun XIII Denha renounced Catholicism and returned to the old church (the current line of the Patriarchs of the Assyrian Church of the East). Hence creating two Patriarchs for the Church of the East . By the same token, in 1607 Eliyya VIII was accepted as Catholic, hence creating two Chaldean Patriarchs. In 1672, Yousef (Joseph), the Archbishop of Diarbakir (Amed), a particularly Catholic center, followed the advice of the Capuchin missionaries and withdrew from communion with Mar Eliyya, again creating two Chaldean Patriarchs.
